Ethos is built so your journal can live as files you own. This page states what stays on the device, what can leave when you choose, and what we do not do.
Every entry is two files in the folder you picked: a Markdown file for the text and a JSON file for the strokes. That folder is yours. Delete the app and the notes stay where they are.
The app also keeps small local settings on the device, such as which notebook you are writing in and a bookmark to reopen your folder.
On iPhone and iPad, text recognition uses Apple built-in recognition on the device. The app makes no network requests for that path.
On Android, recognition uses Google ML Kit on the device. The first use may download a language model from Google once. That SDK is Google's, and Google's terms cover what Google collects about its own SDK.
Claude and ChatGPT only receive notebooks you mark as shared. Private notebooks stay out of AI context by default. Sharing is notebook-level and intentional.
We do not claim perfect transcription. Titles and search come first. Recognition can improve over time without promising perfection.
Optional one-way copy into tools you connect (for example Notion) is off until you turn it on. When it is on, only the content you choose to send leaves under your credentials. Ink geometry is not required for that path.
Optional encrypted cloud sync, when offered, is sync only. Your local folder remains the source of truth.
No advertising identifier. No third-party tracking for ads. No account required to keep a local journal. No silent upload of your private notebooks into model context.
Ethos is made for adults and is not directed at children.
